Data Recovery Solution: Data Loss Dangers
As drives get smaller and smaller, drive heads come closer and closer to the rotating media. The results are more frequent equipment failures and more destructive data losses.
• A company attempts to restore lost data from carefully collected backups, only to discover the backups are unreadable.
• A RAID system’s cooling process collapses, causing its drives to overheat and fail.
• An MIS administrator completes a fix on a mirrored drive without shutting off the mirror, losing the reference point for the original data.
• A business adds a drive to its NetWare server, accidentally erasing the server’s partitions.
Data loss disasters like these are becoming increasingly commonplace. This is due, in part, to rapidly changing computer technologies. The increase in data disasters also stems from the sheer volume of data generated by modern companies and the decentralized way that data is produced, collected, and stored. As distributed network models proliferate, and organizations continue to open their doors to the Internet, threats to data integrity and data security are compounded.
While data backups would seem to offer an effective shield against these threats, backups do not always provide comprehensive data protection. That is because the data backup plans developed by many companies are not fully realized or, worse yet, not followed.
What is more, individuals often fail to test the “restore” capabilities of their backup media. If the backups are faulty, a simple data loss can quickly become a data disaster. Finally, even if backups are successful, they only contain data collected during the most recent backup session. As a result, a data loss can potentially rob you of your most current data, despite your backup attempts.
The reality of data loss forces business executives to ask themselves some serious questions. For example:
- Does a major data loss put your business interests at risk?
- Does data loss expose your company to legal repercussions?
- How susceptible are your data storage devices to corruptions and crashes?
- What can be done to properly protect and recover critical data?
The importance of computer data to the daily operation of your organization requires you not only to ask these questions, but to successfully answer them as well.
Data Recovery Cost
When a hard drive failures, it can mean that data files are corrupted or deleted. Corrupted files can often be fixed using data recovery softwares.
When the hard drive makes whirring or clicking noises or is unusually hot, or if the computer won’t start, the hard drive could be physically damaged, in which case a data recovery company may be able to recover data from the damaged hard drives.
The cost for data recovery Service can vary significantly from case to case, and is dependent on many factors such as amount and type of media, condition of the media, amount of resources used, and the overall time needed to recover the data.
Typical cost:
• Data recovery softwares are good choices for hard drives with deleted or corrupted files but no actual physical damage. These data recovery softwares range from $40-$129.00.
• For disks that are physically damaged, Aero Data Recovery charges a flat rate as low as $219.00 for a single hard disk drive of any capacity with any operating system.
• Some vendors charge based on the capacity of the hard disk. Disk Doctors charges $375 to recover data from a 30 GB single hard disk drive running Windows and charges $1,000 for a 500 GB drive.
• Others firms provide only estimates. Factors that influence price include the number of files to be recovered and the turnaround time.
What should be included:
• Physical assessment of disk failure problem(s) and determination what data can be recovered.
• Delivering recovered data to customers.
• Customer support.
Additional cost:
• Evaluation. Many firms do not charge for this, while others charge $20-$200.
• Expedited service. Most vendors expect a turnaround of three to seven business days Rush service can run to several thousand dollars.
• The cost of returning a hard drive is sometimes included in the quote.
• Cost of media used to return recovered data to customers. For small amounts of data, customers can supply CDs or a USB computer stick (approximately $15.00). A common option is for customers to supply a portable hard drive ($110-$332) when they send in their hard drives for repair. Recovered data can be obtained via secure online download, which may be the best option for international clients.
• Pick-up and delivery service can cost around $40.00 if a customer is located near the firm.
Shopping for data recovery:
• One way to find a provider is through a computer hardware vendor which may have a partnership with a data recovery service provider. For example, CompUSA uses DriveSavers Data Recovery for the computers they sell.
• Disk Doctors and DTI Data Recovery have lab sites located all over the U.S.
• Finally, some vendors, such as ESS Data Recovery, are authorized to open hard drives by all hard drive manufacturers without voiding warranties.

PC Backup Pro offers many advantages over NT Backup
For users that are using Windows NT, 2000, or 2003, Microsoft offers a built-in backup utility (ntbackup.exe). But the use of this utility is limited to only small pc networks as the programs allows for minimal data recoverability if a system should crash.
Limitations of NT Backup the backup program from Microsoft:
- With the backup utility only mapped network drives can’t be backed up, meaning Network-wide data backup is missing as a possibility
- Program doesn’t allow backup to be performed on removal media like CD-R (compact disc recordable), CD-RW (compact disc rewritable), or DVD-R (digital video disc recordable) device. This is because Windows file system does not support formatting on the above mention media. For this backup program these media types appear as in-compatible read-only device media.
- Support for Heterogeneous backups is not included and it fails to backup the special database file systems used by SQL Server, Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes.
- The utility will skip backup of files that are in use. So while performing complete backup all users must disconnect from the system.
It’s these limitations that compel Window’s users to use third-party software solutions instead.
Backing Up User Data with PC Backup Pro.
Unlike NT Backup, PC Backup Pro is a fast Backup and Restoration program solution that allows IT administrators to be able to use more types of tape systems, with more tape options and also to back up to disks. Plus it also performs a host of other advanced operation services. PC Backup Pro also allows authorized end users to create their own backup jobs and store them on a shared server. The administrator can later backup individual user backups from file servers to tapes or to some other offline media storage.
Key Benefits offered by PC Backup Pro include:
- Supports variety of media.
You can quickly perform backups on variety of media including hard disks, removal disks, USB drives, DVD and Blueray. - Built-in Compression.
While the Microsoft standard backup utility lacks software compression, WinBackup has been designed keeping pc home computers or workstation users requirements in mind. The program performs software compression of all backup jobs before they are stored on a media thereby significantly reducing network traffic as well as server loads and storage requirement. The program can achieve efficiency up to 50% while compressing mixed data and up to 90% compression for text documents and emails. - On-the-fly Encryption for data security
As backups often contain sensitive data in form of emailsor other documents, it is highly advisable to encrypt such backup jobs before being sent across the network. Users can easily encrypt their sensitive data by using either 128- or 256-bit AES encryption, making it virtually impossible for unauthorized users to access the data.
Select Workstation Backup From A Range Of Products!
Regular workstation backups are something which should be part of your professional working schedule as this lead to a better business well-being.
NovaBACKUP is an easy to manage backup software from one of the leading manufacturer of computer backup technologies. Being in the backup business for over 15 years.
Here are some of the different alternatives to make a workstation backup for your computer using products from NovaStor.
- NovaBACKUP for Workstation
- NovaBACKUP Server Edition
- NovaNET 10NovaStor Online Backup Service over the Net
- NovaBACKUP is the main backup solution for windows based computers.
There are different versions. One client backup and one backup version for servers, called Server Edition.
These are easy to use backup solution for a Windows based Workstation.
The main difference between the two versions is that the backup program in the Server Edition works on a service using a special scheduler that runs on Windows XP, 2000, NT server. This can run without any user being logged on. The backup is only performed on the server with the server edition versions. So unless the data from the computer backup is stored on the server over a network another solution is required.
The scheduler for the client computer backup version works as a standard program a user must be logged on for the backup program to work.
Here are ome special consideration for PC backup in Windows XP. For a more complete solution for network based computer from anything from a single workstation, small network, up to a corporate large scale network the NovaNet 10 set of products is an attractive solution. It comes in different versions supporting one of the following network software’s: Linux, Windows and NovelNetware. NovaStor Online Backup Service over the Net. Online backup for a workstation over the net sounds like a joke, but remote storage is now days becoming increasing popular. How about security and backup transfer time? The backup is always encrypted, both during transfer and at the remote storage facility.
The transfer is made incremental with the latest file changes. The transfer is performed with compressed data on the changes only using the latest FastBIT binary patching technology. This is a convenient, secure and cost effective solution for backup.
One advantage is that the data is always locked away at a remote location, so that in case of a fire or theft, the data is locked away safely. The remote backup software which is used is an easy to use even for beginners. The software can be used to set-up backup at regular intervals.
What Should You Look For In A Hard Disk Image Software Product!
By making a disk image of your computer you can protect your data and be up and running in case of a virus attack or a hard disk failure. You can also move the whole system to other computers by having your information duplicated. This is called hard disk cloning.
In this way you can set-up new computers with a set of ready data and software configurations really easy and fast. Actually there is no pure hard disk image backup software in the market. What these products do is they copy single hard disk partitions. Of course if the hard disk is composed of just one partition then it makes a copy of the whole disk image in the transfer. You may also look at more advanced products specially developed for partition copy and disk manipulation! One benefit by having a image from the hard disk on a backup is that in case of hard disk failure it is often a very quick procedure to restore the data from the backup. If the hard disk backup software is equipped with a free rescue start-up disk utility, and most of them are, then you do not need to install the operating system and backup software before you can copy and restore your hard drive image back to the hard drive.
